Every job starts with a description on the phone before anyone is dispatched, because the year, make, model and key type change what the work is. Proof of ownership is required before we open a vehicle or make a key for it. That is not paperwork for its own sake; it is the line between a locksmith and somebody helping a stranger take a car.

What a car key actually is now

Understanding a modern key explains nearly every problem on this page, because a key is two separate things in one object and they fail independently.

The first part is mechanical: a metal blade cut to a pattern that lifts wafers or pins inside the door and ignition lock so the cylinder can turn. The second part is electronic: a transponder chip, usually moulded into the head of the key, that answers a challenge from the car's immobiliser. On a proximity or push-to-start vehicle there is a third element — a radio remote that the car detects without being inserted anywhere.

Those parts fail separately, and knowing which one has failed tells you what the job is. A key that turns the lock but will not start the engine has a working blade and a chip the car does not accept. A key that will not go into the lock at all, or goes in and will not turn, is a mechanical problem and the chip is irrelevant. A push-to-start car that will not detect a fob sitting in your hand is a radio problem. Most of the time people describe all three as "my key stopped working", and the first thing worth doing on the phone is separating them.

Cutting the blade

There are two common blade styles. An edge-cut key has notches along the outer edges and is the older, simpler pattern, still used across a lot of vehicles. A laser-cut or sidewinder key has a thicker blade with a winding channel milled into its faces; it is stronger, it goes into the lock either way up, and it takes a different machine to cut.

When you still have a working key, duplication is straightforward, and it is by far the cheapest moment to get a spare made. When you do not, the cut has to be derived. That is done from the vehicle's key code where one is available, or by decoding a lock on the vehicle to read the wafer positions and calculate the cut. Decoding is the reason an all-keys-lost job is done at the car and takes longer than a duplicate.

One detail matters more than people expect: copying from a worn key copies the wear. Every duplicate inherits the shape of what it was traced from, plus the tolerance of the machine. Copy an original that has been in a pocket for eight years and you get a key slightly off specification; copy that copy and you get one that turns a fresh lock and fails on the worn ignition it actually has to work in. When a car has three keys and only one of them reliably starts it, this is usually why. A key cut to the code rather than traced from a copy comes out at factory specification and is the one to keep as the master.

Programming: what actually happens

Programming means teaching the car to accept a specific chip. The car holds a list of authorised transponder identities in its immobiliser module, and a new key has to be written into that list. It is not something that happens in the key — the key is the same before and after; the car's memory changes.

How that is done varies enormously by manufacturer and model year. Some vehicles have an onboard procedure that can be performed with an existing working key. Most require a tool connected to the diagnostic port, communicating with the immobiliser module. Many require a security code or PIN tied to the vehicle, which has to be retrieved before programming can begin. Some later vehicles hold the immobiliser data behind a manufacturer server and impose a mandatory waiting period before a new key can be added — that is a design decision by the car maker, it applies whoever does the work, and any locksmith who tells you they can bypass it is not telling you the truth.

Two more things worth knowing. Adding a key to a car that already has one working key is a fundamentally smaller job than originating the first key on a car that has none. And on many vehicles, programming a fresh set erases the previously stored keys — which is exactly what you want if a key has been lost or stolen, because a lost key that remains authorised still starts your car.

All keys lost

This is the full job: no working key exists, so the blade has to be originated and the electronics written from nothing. What it takes, in order, is proof the vehicle is yours, the VIN, the vehicle physically present and accessible, the cut derived from a code or by decoding a lock, a blank of the correct type in the van, and a programming session at the car with whatever security data that model requires.

It is worth being direct about why this is a bigger job than a duplicate: every step that a working key would have shortcut has to be performed from scratch, and on some models the manufacturer's own security process adds time that nobody can compress. The single thing that avoids all of it is a spare key made while you still have one — which is why the least glamorous service on this list is also the most useful one.

Push-to-start will not detect the key

A proximity system needs three things to work: a fob with enough transmit power, an antenna in the car that hears it, and a vehicle electrical system awake enough to run the check. Go through them in that order.

Start with the fob battery — a coin cell that has been slowly weakening, usually noticed first as needing to stand closer to the car to unlock it. Then check for interference: a fob sitting in a bag beside a second fob, a phone, a laptop or a metal case can be masked. Then the car's own battery. A twelve-volt battery too weak to crank is often still strong enough to light the dash, and people conclude the key has failed when the car has.

Almost every push-to-start vehicle has a documented backup for exactly this situation — a specific place to hold the fob, or a slot to put it in, so the car can read it by close-range coupling instead of radio. It is in the owner's manual, it takes ten seconds, and it gets a lot of people moving without a call. Worth reading before you need it.

Key fob not working

Remote failures are usually mundane. The coin cell inside — commonly a CR2032, sometimes a CR2450 or similar — has a finite life, and shrinking range over several weeks is the classic warning. Beyond the battery: the small metal contacts inside the case lose tension or corrode, a cracked case lets moisture in, and the rubber button membrane wears through at the button used most, which is why the unlock button dies long before the others.

Water is the one to take seriously. A fob that goes into salt water is not saved by drying it out. The board corrodes internally and typically fails a week or two later, at the worst possible moment. If a fob has been swimming, treat it as compromised and replace it while you still have a working spare.

After a battery change some vehicles need the remote resynchronised to the car. That is a short procedure, not a rebuild, and it does not mean the fob is dead.

Ignition problems

An ignition lock cylinder is a small mechanism doing heavy, repetitive work with a bulky keyring hanging off it. Wafers wear, springs weaken, and the cylinder develops enough slop to accept a wrong key one day and reject the right one the next.

The symptoms map to causes fairly cleanly. A key that goes in and will not turn at all, when the same key still works the door, points at ignition wafer wear or at the steering lock being bound — which happens when the wheels are turned against a kerb and the steering lock is loaded. Rocking the steering wheel gently while turning the key relieves that load, and it resolves a lot of these calls with no work at all. A key that turns partway and stops usually means the cylinder is worn or something inside has broken. A key that turns fully with no crank at all is more often electrical or a starter issue than a lock issue.

A key stuck in the ignition is its own case. On most automatics the key will not come out unless the shifter is fully in park, so the first check is to press firmly into park and try again. Beyond that, a worn cylinder can trap a key. What matters is what you should not do: do not use pliers, and do not force it. A key twisted out with pliers snaps off flush inside the cylinder, and a job that was a cylinder service becomes an extraction plus a cylinder service.

The best preventive measure costs nothing. Take everything else off the keyring. A heavy bunch of keys hanging from an ignition is a lever working on the cylinder every time you go over a bump, and it is a genuine cause of premature ignition wear.

Broken key extraction

Keys break because they were already fatigued — a hairline crack at the shoulder, a blade bent from being used to lever something, or a soft aftermarket blank that flexed once too often. The break usually happens when the key is turned under load.

What to do is simple: stop. Do not push the remaining fragment further in trying to line it up. Do not attempt to grab it with pliers unless a substantial part is standing proud and comes out with no resistance at all. Do not use glue on anything, which is a suggestion that circulates online and which reliably converts a straightforward extraction into a cylinder that has to be replaced. Leave it, and say on the phone that there is a fragment in the lock so the right tools are on the van.

After an extraction the other half of the job is a key that will not break again. If a key snapped, the remaining copies are the same age and the same wear, and one of them is next. Cutting a fresh key to code at the same visit is the correct end to that job.

Car lockouts, opened without damage

Modern doors are crowded. Inside a typical door skin there are window regulator mechanisms, wiring looms for locks, mirrors and speakers, moisture barriers, and on many vehicles the airbag system extends into the door or the pillar beside it. That is why the improvised approaches cause the damage they do: a coat hanger through the weather seal tears the seal and snags wiring, and levering a door frame to make a gap bends the frame permanently so the door never seals the same way again. The bill for that comfortably exceeds the lockout.

A proper opening is done with tools designed for it, chosen for that vehicle, by someone who knows what is behind the panel they are working near. It is not described in detail here, for obvious reasons. What you should expect is that the technician identifies the vehicle first, tells you if it is one of the models where a non-destructive entry is genuinely difficult, and does not start until ownership is established.

Two situations get priority and you should say so immediately: a child or a pet locked inside, particularly in Florida heat, and a vehicle left running. Both change the urgency of the call, and in the case of a child in a hot car the correct first call is the emergency services, not a locksmith.

Keys locked in the trunk

Boot lockouts vary by vehicle more than door lockouts do. Some cars have a mechanical release inside the cabin, some have an electrical release that will not work with the car locked, some have folding rear seats that give access, and some have an emergency release handle inside the boot itself. A number of vehicles will refuse to lock at all with a key detected inside — and a number will happily lock anyway. Which of those applies is a model-specific question, and it is the first thing to establish on the phone, because it decides whether the job is opening the cabin or opening the boot.

What makes one car key cost more than another

No prices are quoted on this page, because a number given before knowing the vehicle is a guess. What is worth knowing is the factors that drive it, so a quote makes sense when you hear one: whether the blade is edge-cut or laser-cut, whether the key carries a transponder, whether it is a remote-head key or a proximity fob, whether the car needs a security code retrieved before programming, whether any working key survives, whether the manufacturer imposes a waiting period, and how many keys you want programmed in the session. Ask for the reasoning behind a quote — anyone doing this properly can tell you which of those apply to your car.

Dealership or locksmith

The honest comparison is about logistics rather than capability. A dealer works from a fixed location, so a car with no working key has to be towed there, and the department keeps business hours. A mobile auto locksmith comes to the vehicle wherever it sits and works outside those hours, which is when most of these problems happen. Both cut and program keys; the difference is where the car has to be and when the work can happen. There is a narrow set of late-model vehicles where the manufacturer restricts key data to its own network, and where that is true you should be told plainly rather than strung along.

Proof of ownership

Before a vehicle is opened or a key is made, we establish that it is yours. That means photo identification and a document tying you to the vehicle — registration, title, or insurance in your name matching the VIN. For a company vehicle, authorisation from the business. For a car recently bought, the bill of sale. If the paperwork is locked inside the car, say so on the phone and we will work out what can be established another way before anyone drives out. This requirement is not flexible, and it is the reason this trade can be trusted at all.

What to have ready when you call

Year, make and model. Whether it is a key you turn or a push-to-start button. Whether any working key exists anywhere, including one at home or with a family member — that single answer can change the whole job. Whether the car starts, cranks, or does nothing. Whether the key goes into the lock. Whether there is a fragment stuck in the ignition or door. Where the vehicle is, precisely, including which level of a car park. And whether anyone or any animal is inside it.

Straight answers

My key turns but the car will not start.

The blade is fine and the chip is not being accepted. Frequently this is a key copied at a kiosk, where the cut was made correctly and no transponder was ever programmed to the car. A chip can be programmed at the vehicle.

Can you make a key with no key at all?

Yes. That is an all-keys-lost job: the cut is derived from a code or by decoding a lock, and the electronics are programmed at the vehicle. It needs proof of ownership, the VIN, and the car present.

Will a new key erase my old one?

On many vehicles, programming a new set clears the previously stored keys. If a key has been lost or stolen, that is what you want, because a lost key that is still authorised still starts your car. Say on the phone if that is the goal.

Do I need to tow the car?

Not for key or ignition work — that is done where the vehicle sits. A tow is only relevant if the vehicle has a fault beyond the lock and key system.

The remote works but the car will not detect it at the button.

Check the coin cell first, then look for a second fob or a phone masking it, then check the car's own battery. Then use the backup position documented in the owner's manual, which lets the car read a weak fob at close range.

Is a spare worth it?

It is the cheapest thing on this page and it prevents the most expensive one. A key duplicated while you hold a working original is a short job. The same key originated from nothing, after the last one is gone, is not.
